I have had Dawei 388D-1 OX and I have verified that some come with a color matte color and others color glossy.

This is normal?

what differences are there between the two?

You might want to post a few photos illustrating this. I've applied several sheets of D-1 (for others, I don't use long pips myself) and I can't say I've noticed. In any case, I'll bet it varies from batch to batch, perhaps even from day to day - it might have something to do with the way the sheets were pulled out of the molds, by how long they were left in the molds to cool after they cured, perhaps by miniscule differences in stuff they mixed in with the raw rubber, or maybe it's the molds themselves - maybe some are smooth, some aren't... (no idea how they actually make the molds). In any case.. I doubt it's intentional.

As for differences in playing properties - perhaps you are in the best position to tell the rest of us, since you seem to have a few sheets of both types....?

I attach the pictures.

Glossy: more thin, more dangerous (I think), very difficult for glue

Is it normal? Yes and no. Chinese rubbers have notorious quality control. It does not surprise me. BTW I use saviga V long pips, lots of variations in color of matte red (I use red or blue or green-not black LP)

I use 388d black ox, they start off glossy when new and end up more matte as they age, never had any variation in the way they play

Yes, it would be a risky venture for you to enter in Olympics with the glossy stuff. Be sure you will not. ⚠

In my experience the light red one blocks very badly . It is , in my view, how Dawei shows their lack of quality control .It is the dark red one that is the better. On the other hand, the black one is a totally different rubber, softer, pushes better but blocks worse than the dark red one .

The same goes with Bomb Talent. The red one chops better , the black one pushes better and it is softer .

Oh! just forgot! the same goes for Spinlord Stachelfeuer,The light red one is horrible ; it is the dark red one the better.

curious, innit? they are all made in C-H-I-N-A!!!

Its not bad quality, indeed is good quality because dawei picks the best stuff for their best customers who pay more. I have seen a box with top notch looking smooth rubbers.

If Dawei picks the best stuff for their best customers, why do they sell the bad stuff? . I have bought a fair amount of 388d1 over the years.Always, always the light red version was worse than the dark red one .

I call quality control to discard the stuff that is unsuitable to sell . If Dawei sells the worst stuff anyway and gets their name smeared by the rubbers that outrageously perform worse, they go agaisnt the grain .

I used to deal with Dawei, and from memory, they don't make their own rubbers, they contract it out to other factories, which is why there will always be variations between one batch and another.
Unless it's of poor quality, whether a rubber is 'good' or 'bad' does depend on what the user wants. Some want it faster, some want it slower, some want more grip, some want more reversal.

I agree though that poor quality stuff should not be sold.... but if it's cheap enough there will usually still be a buyer for it.

They sell the worst batch to customers who pay less money.
I have seen perfect blades from Dawei and Yinhe. No rough edges . Pristine Big Dipper rubber sheets.

I took these photos on my last visit to a local store.

At first I thought the different color of sponge is due to different thickness 0.5mm vs 1.0mm, but when I asked for 0.8mm it's also dark red and then I asked whether the different color sponge is due to different thickness, and the answered was: "they just came differently at times, nothing to do with difference in thickness." and this was for their more expensive line, not the lowest/cheapest line, either.
