Anybody knows? I am taking a China tour in late October and will stay in Beijing for a few days before joining the tour. If you know where to find good tt buys, please let me know.

Where about in Beijing are you going to be staying? I'll try to see the list of stores in Beijing out of the TT World magazine this sunday.

But, unless you're buying chinese stuff, the rest are going to be pricey. Still, may not be as pricey as in the states... I don't know... I just know the prices there for non-chinese stuff are more expensive than here.

Well, I am going to have three days there in Beijing, living in a relative's place about 1/2 hour from the airport.

I am going to buy only Chinese rubbers, LP or invert and either table tennis shoes or badminton shoes, and see what else are there.

Half an hour from the airport... Possibly in Dongcheng District. Where there are lots of embassies from foreign countries... Lots of foreign restaurants too...

3 days in Beijing including tours and what not right, so may not have lots of free time... Only at nights...

If you do live in that I area I assume, you should go to this Tibet Restaurant, Makye Ame. It's dinner & show. Great stuff. I've been there numerous time. Almost every time I go to Beijing I go there. Reservation required though. hhhmmm... even when I stayed at an opposite part of the city I still go there...

One time I saw a couple of tourists from England with Lonely Planet in their hands wanted to dine there but couldn't because they didn't make reservation. I had reserved a table for 4, but because I was only with 2 of my friends I invited them over and we squeezed in together. They had fun.

Thanks, rophish2k. Actually, I will be there for three days before the tour arrive, so I will have three full days of seeing and dining in Beijing.

I don't have to worry a thing about restaurant reservations because I will be in good hands.

Born in Hong Kong, educated in USA and have never been to China, feel ashamed.

Good. Plenty of time for shopping and dining...

Here's the info on that Resto I mentioned ealier:
Makye Ame
Rita Lu (Rita Road) can't remember the number.
(010) 65069616
It's on second floor above other restaurant (dutch or something, can't remember). Small sign with Makye Ame.

Tell your relative it's at Jianguomen. Behind Friendship Store near CITIC. They'll know. When you turn right to enter Rita Lu (road), the distance about 20ish meter, it'll be on the right.

Show starts at 8pm, so get there before. I'd say come at 7.30pm. 15 minutes for you to be seated, look at the menu and find stuff to eat, look around the place. Food will start to show up in time for the show or slightly after. Show lasts 45-60 minutes.

Call for reservation at least one day in advance. Ask for table near the stage for better view of the shows.

Try the tibet beer and the ribs... Yummy....
Try the goat/sheep milk/tea if you feel adventurous for the night...

There is a large sporting goods store on Wangfujing Rd. which is in the heart of Beijing, and is the most famous shopping street in the city. You can't miss it, it is close to Tianamen Sq., the Forbidden City, and all the other major tourist attractions in the central part of the city. Every taxi driver can take you there immediately. The store is called the Tianlisheng Sports Mall. They carry a pretty good product line on several floors, especially Butterfly, Donic, DHS. The also carry Lining clothing, Mizuno shoes, etc. Prices are not particularly cheap anywhere in China for non-Chinese brands. This place is easy to find, and you will probably want to take a stroll down this street anyway. At least in June, they had a big poster of Wang Liqin in the front window. Nearby there is a little walking street with incredible outdoor food stalls, not to be missed.

There are also lots of small specialty pong shops throughout the city. HOWEVER, some of what they sell may be fakes. I found a pretty good shop on a street called Di'anmen Xidajie. It is next door to a badminton shop. Harder to find, but it is walking distance from Behai park.

Depending on exactly where, from Dongcheng district to Wangfujing Rd is about 10 min by taxi. It will cost about 20 RMB at most. By the way, Waldner's sports bar is in Chaoyang district, not far from where you will be staying (in the embassy area near the third ring RD in the NE part of central Beijing). It is small and not that interesting, but maybe worth a stop if you are a fanatic.

Tat, the Di'anmen Xidajie (Street) near Beihai Park is just a bit north of The Forbidden Kingdom.

If you email/msn me your email I could send you beijing map pdf.

Make sure you see the White Dagoba in Beihai park. That is a really nice park in the morning.

The little shop I was referring to is east of Beihai park about a mile, past the People's Liberation Army Headquarters, on the south side of the street. Their product line was odd, they had a little bit of something from every major brand, and had complete product lines of none of them, and I am almost 100% certain that the Viscaria that they had on display was a fake. But it is close to some parts of the city with interesting Hutongs to explore. I ended up not buying anything, but was tempted by a Butterfly Adolecens, which is not found in the US anymore.

The big sports mall will be much easier to find. They have all the latest stuff, I saw Photinos, Amultarts, Ishlions, etc.

The Pink Spots on upper left corner is the Di'Anmenxi Street. Just above Beihai Park.

The Tibet Resto is at the Green Spot on the lower right corner.

Tat, what a co-incidence...I'm born in Australia and educated in Victoria, so I also feel ashamed I haven't been to China. Pick me up on the way?

Rok, I didn't think Indonesia was THAT close to China you would go so often. You sure make me hungry taking about this restaurant.
